This Is The Way The World Ends

From Cormac McCarthy's The Road , regarding the sea shore: Glass floats covered with gray crust. The bones of seabirds. At the tide line a woven mat of weeds and the ribs of fishes in their millions stretching along the shore as far as eye could sea like an isocline of death. One vast salt sepulchre. Senseless. Senseless.

Baby Steps

This is a step in the right direction. Calling this a " stunner " is pretty questionable, even given the Church*'s recent meddling in California. The Church has always been a few years behind the curve, but they always seem to sense where the wind is blowing one way or another. From the Salt Lake Tribune : Hours after the LDS Church announced its support Tuesday night of proposed Salt Lake City ordinances aimed at protecting gay and transgender residents from discrimination in housing and employment, the City Council unanimously approved the measures. "The church supports these ordinances," spokesman Michael Otterson told the council, "because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage." The HuffPo has more on how Corsi is a shameless liar and his article is total trash (par for the course with Jerome "Swift Boat" Corsi).

Many criticisms of the conservative opposition to the Democratic health care reform effort start with some iteration of "Well, smarty-pants, where is the *Republican* plan, if you guys have a better idea?" In the case of the GOP's previous efforts to come up with some semblance of a plan, that was a perfectly valid complaint. Now, however, the conservative approach to health care reform seems to have coalesced around a few basic principles: allow "inter-state competition" between insurance plans and enact tort reform. Now there's plenty wrong with the second plank, but this post is regarding the first. Bruce Webb at MyDD waded through the Boehner Amendment to HR3962, and discovered this interesting tidbit: Title III introduces a ringer. Although the Title is called Expanding Choices by Allowing Americans to Buy Health Care Coverage Across State Lines what it really means is that insurers can simply pick any state they like as their 'primary state'
