Welcome to Utah, Mitt!

posted on 11/15/2018 by the Salt City Sinner Utah’s population is quickly growing , due to both our leporine birth rate and a steady influx of new residents from other states. One such incoming resident is Willard Mitt “Mittens” Romney, our new junior senator! Now, Utah is a unique place, both geographically and culturally, and I worry that Mitt – a native Michigander who went on to become a Bay Stater – is going to have a hard time adapting. Well, one of the first things Mitt is going to learn about Utah is how gosh darned neighborly we are! In that spirit, here are a few things I think he ought to check out, things that will help him to comprehend the buzzing soul of the Beehive State. Family Dinner At Chuck-A-Rama As Mittens is stepping into the tattered, ancient house-slippers of Orrin Hatch, what better way to understand the culture of Utah than by dining at Orrin’s favorite eatery ? Whatever clever staffer has been tweeting as Orrin has had great f...

A Fun Game To Play At Home

posted on 12/4/2013 by the Salt City Sinner Bored on a snowy day? Pestered by persistent political perfidy? Looking to limber up your worldview or sprout a proud rack of plenti-pointed paranoias? I have just the fun time activity for you! Think of this post as “interactive” in the sense of a Choose Your Own Adventure book or a dice-and-paper role playing game. Indeed, you will need dice to play this game, which we'll call “Could It Be Or Couldn't It.” CIBOCI will require two six-sided die (or 2d6), the type you can find in any Yahtzee box or dusty old Monopoly set. In a pinch, one could theoretically use the fuzzy dice from one's rear-view mirror, as long as they roll and have six sides. warning: there is a not inconsequential risk this may happen All righty, at this preliminary stage we must separate the goats from the lambs, so to speak, so CHOOSE YOUR OWN INTRODUCTORY SECTION. Those of you who are rational/material types, or purely in this for The Chuckles, g...

Tales of an Erstwhile Practitioner

Posted 11/2/12 by Law Nerd, Esq. Whereas I would ordinarily perform some feat of legal research to enlighten the questionable audience, today I summarize for our readers the lessons of a young attorney. I have only been technically able to "practice" law for the past week and a half, having been sworn in on the 25th of October in Montpelier, Vermont, the wee-est capital in the nation.  I will spend the next few years waiting for competence, as befits a profession that prides itself on obscurity and minutiae, and puts a $200,000 price tag on entry.  In my short time as a patient young associate, I have learned: That it is important to ask the court to accept your evidence if you intend to use it to prove, you know, your case; to master the ability to translate chicken scratch; that it's scary to sign your name; that wearing a well-fitting suit feels like battle armor; to ask the harried partner his precise expectations, else fumb...

The Living Planet Aquarium

A Photo-Blog Posted by: ViewFinder 8.26.12  The closing of "Shark Week" at the Living Planet Aquarium brought some great fun for the family.   Below are two pods, one that just hatched a baby Tiger Shark the day before and the other one still waiting to release the new shark.  Was amazing to see the sack up close and learn more about how these amazing and beautiful creatures make their way into our world. The Lion Fish was one of my son's favorite creatures to view during his first trip to the Aquarium.   The spark in his eye, the glimmer of his smile, the musical laughter that came from my son was the most magical thing that I was able to see today!  And in the end... the creatures I loved the most... went home with ME!
