Zero Democracy

posted 10/16/2012 by the Salt City Sinner Think of me as a Tarot Card. I represent "Opportunities About To Arise." They did some very interesting and downright inhumane experiments with rat colonies, Neville.  They found when certain population limits are reached, all it takes is the addition of one extra rat...  and the whole community slides into unstoppable chaos. One little rat and Utopia turns into Rwanda. So here we are, America. Two presidential debates down, and what more could possibly be at stake? Two men in expensive and identical suits have engaged in a hideously pre-ordained set of talking points ( link ), focus groups engaged and "dial-polling" (thanks, Frank Luntz, you inhuman sack of excrement) purified. Truly, this is the end of days, if popular culture is to be believed. The rise of pop-culture's embrace of the zombie apocalypse, the rise of survivalism since the 90s: everybody from your friendly local securalist to...

Gov Herbert's Response to Firework Ban Petition

Post by: ViewFinder For the last few days several Utahns have been electronically signing a petition to ban fireworks in Utah due to the extreme high temperatures and overly dry conditions.  High winds are only escalating the fire issues which already exist. After Moveon.org delivered the petition to Gov. Herbert, Tom Mills of Moveon.org received a response from Governor Herbert's office the following is an excerpt from the email: "What we don't want to do is be like Congress," he said. "Congress is good at doing two things. One is nothing, and two is overreact. We don’t want to do that. Again, we want to do what is appropriate, measured and thoughtful. That's what we're doing. We're not going to overreact on that." Governor Herbert is obviously more concerned with upsetting a few voters than with the health, safety and well being of ALL Utahns.  Herbert has recently been quoted several times as saying you "can't outlaw stup...

Your (Probably) Last Salt City Sinner Update For 2011

New Years' Eve is coming, and if the folks whose empire apparently extended northward to modern-day Georgia  (actually crackpot bull$h!t) have anything to say on the subject, it's that we're boned! Holiday-hating curmudgeons would say that attempts to cash in on a potential apocalypse theorized by an ancient political economy we still do not understand to this day, aside from a few unsettling notions about their grasp of mathematics and astronomy , is a little unsettling: If there is one place sure to be visited by an ironical apocalyptic thunderbolt, I would wager it would a dubstep "bar rave" in Salt Lake City, UT. Preceded, of course, by the grave of Richard Nixon, the '12 DNC, or possibly any place that I find a moment's solace. At EVE, Salt Lake City's bold and ongoing experiment in sober public celebration, #OccupySLC will be hosting an Art Wall in Gallivan Plaza. Can't make it? Kick them a few ducats you filthy plu...

#Occupy Protests Update : "Zesty Yet Technically Non-Lethal"

Photo by Ted Kemp - This is acceptable, because A.) that's London, which Guy Fawkes tried to blow up, and B.) I'm not sure if that guy is a cop or not, which is just awesome on so many levels. The #Occupy protests are still working their weird magic over the globe, with individual protests in large metropolitan areas waxing or waning according to the strength of local organization. At gatherings in the US and elsewhere, a few noteworthy events unfolded (please forgive me if I've missed anything). Occupy Cincinnati was shut down by the fuzz, who arrested 23 people - which makes me hope we have some fans of Robert Anton Wilson in the house. The Tampa PD collared six protesters just a little while ago. #OccupySLC isn't the only base camp with a robust lending library: meet the Occupy Boston Library and its librarian. #OccupyOakland is about to get ugly . #OccupyMelbourne was violently torn apart , writes Stephen Webster for the Raw Story: A large gath...

#OccupyWallStreet Update: This $h!t Is Bananas

I mentioned earlier that the #OccupyWallStreet protests in America have spread throughout the world's metropolitan areas, and that they had set Rome on fire. I think at this juncture we can bury any comparisons to the Tea Party. CNN reports : The "Occupy Wall Street" movement went global Saturday, crossing the Atlantic to many European cities, where protesters turned out by the thousands for largely peaceful demonstrations. In many cities, handfuls of protesters donned masks portraying a sinister, smiling face with a pointy black moustache and a thin lip beard taken from the movie "V for Vendetta" about a masked hero who fights against totalitarianism. Well, they got that almost completely wrong, which is to say about as right as most people donning "the colors" do. The mask in question portrays Guy Fawkes , a greasy 17th-century Catholic terrorist who tried to blow up Britain's House of Lords. Also, the mask was popularized by the ...
